These past weeks have been absolutely crazy. Between finishing up my masters degree and preparing to move back home, I feel like my life has been paperwork, computers and homework. That is, until the Monday before last, when I received the biggest surprise of my life. And now for the big news: I’M ENGAGED!
My boyfriend and I met 11 years ago at church when I was only 14. We didn’t really like each other at first. By the time I was 17 we had become best friends and had feelings for each other but I still had a lot of growing up to do. I had just graduated high school and even though I really liked him I felt like I needed to explore the world, but he was already falling in love. Long story short, he patiently waited 4 years after that to finally be together and its been a fairytale ever since.
Last year, I decided to get my masters degree in Italy, and even though it meant we’d be long distance, we decided our relationship was strong enough to make it. About 4 months ago, he told me that on his birthday (December 13th) he’d be traveling for work to a little town in the Ecuadorean jungle were he would have no cellphone service. He also told me he was updating his passport so he wouldn’t have it with him for a while. So here I was, completely disconnected from my boyfriend on the day before his birthday, convinced that he was in the jungle. With only a week left in Florence before I graduate and move back home, my friend told me she had planned a surprise dinner for all of us who are graduating so I dressed up and walked to my favorite plaza in Florence, where she had told us to meet. My friends and I were mindlessly taking photos by the carrousel and Christmas tree when I heard my name being called behind me. I turned around and there he was, handsome as ever with a bouquet of white flowers. I was in shock, I hugged him so hard and he told me that from the moment he fell in love he knew he was going to marry me and that he had flown halfway across the world to tell me that. He got down on one knee and proposed.
All my friends and family were in on it. My two best friends in Florence had been speaking on FaceTime with him for months planning the whole thing. He had flown to Madrid a day early, deleted his Whatsapp and Facebook apps to avoid appearing online, he even faked conversations in the background while we were on the phone so I wouldn’t suspect that he was doing something other than what he told me he was doing. He thought of every single detail to make it a complete surprise.
Afterwards we went to dinner at the Four Seasons and it was AMAZING. The food was spectacular, the room was decorated with the most elaborate, elegant Christmas decorations I’ve ever seen, our table filled with rose petals and the wine was to die for. The whole thing still feels like a dream.
The best part is that he stayed with me for the whole week. We spent his birthday together, he went to my graduation and he helped me move out of my apartment.
I’ve honestly never felt such pure, genuine, extreme happiness where I just can’t stop smiling. I never could’ve imagined a more perfect way to finish my Florentine adventure, a year where I grew so much and got to know myself in a way I never expected to. A year where I proved to myself that even though I don’t have to, I can do whatever I want by myself. And now I get to begin the most incredible adventure with the man I’ve always loved.
And on that happy note, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
